How to Connect a Printer to Your Laptop
Your laptop should be straightforward enough when you want to connect to an inkjet printer. As most old inkjet printers use parallel ports to connect to the PC while the modern laptop have USB ports rather than the parallel ports, you may fairly worry about the compatible issues. Here we give you a DIY solution to this problem.
To begin with, check whether you have compatible ports. Some printers come with a Usb Cable, so if the cable fits both end, then you should be all right. Note that the printer end will usually be shaped differently from the USB plug found on your PC. Most printers will have square-type USB connectors.
Secondly, plug your printer's power supply to the mains, and connect the Usb Cable to port on the printer. Connect the USB cable to a free USB slot on your PC. If you are external powered usb hubs like 7 port usb hub, just plug the printer there.
Thirdly, turn on you PC and install the printer driver which comes with the specific model printer. If you are using the advanced operating systems, such as widow 7 or Mac OS X leopard, it will be more convenience for you, as the system will automatically install the driver for you.
Finally, turn on you printer. If you were able to insert the installation CD, it will usually have the installation wizard on auto-run. You will be presented with an installation wizard, which will walk you through the installation process. if there is not auto-run CD, you need to install manually. Go to the control panel, after selecting "add a device" option, you PC will try to search for new devices. As soon as the installation is successful, you will be asked whether to print out a test page.
In addition, in order to receive a better print effect, you should use as short a USB cable as possible. You might be tempted to extend your USB connection using an extension cable. However, do note that the signal will degrade as the cord length increase. If you want to buy a new printer, you are highly recommended to buy a wireless printer, which will let you save on space and trouble of having to snake a cable through your desk or through the floor. As the wireless printer work via WIFI, you can share the printer with several other desktop and notebook PC.
